The smallest of Washington’s 39 counties, the San Juan Islands are reached by both sea and air transportation. This unique collection of over 200 islands,172 of them named, is located midway between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia and is a destination of choice. Of the total 620 square miles within it’s boundaries, over 70% are water. Four of the islands are served by the Washington State Ferry System and hold the majority of the county's 16,000 population. The county seat of Friday Harbor is the only incorporated town in the islands. Statistics show that 45% of island residents are retired and financially independent. The county population generally doubles during the summer season, with island resorts, beaches, fishing and boating attracting many visitors.
It all starts with a friendly wave when you arrive on Lopez Island. It's the island custom. A 45 minute ferry ride from mainland Anacortes delivers you to a rural lifestyle complete with amenities surprising for small island living.
Third largest of the San Juan Islands, Lopez is nestled in an archipelago of more than 172 islands. The island is 10.5 miles long and 4 miles wide and has 56 miles of shoreline.
Nature is still intact here. Country roads wind through forest and pastureland and offer vistas of quiet bays and driftwood-covered beaches. Eagle, hawk and deer sightings are frequent. With a mild climate and an average rainfall of 19 to 25 inches per year, Lopez Island is located in the banana belt of Washington. Summer weather settles in the 70s and winters run between 40 – 50 degrees.
Lopez Village offers islanders a choice of restaurants, a library, bakery, bookstore, galleries and coffee shops. There is also a full service grocery, winery, medical clinic and pharmacy as well as several marinas, hardware store, gas station and schools nearby.
The population of 2300 year-round residents enjoy a relaxed lifestyle attuned to the seasons. The Annual Tour de Lopez bicycle tour wakes the island up in spring. Baby calves and lambs begin to appear. Summer brings the Farmer’s Market with fruits and vegetables harvested from country gardens. Hay gets harvested and quickly put in barns. Fall brings autumn colors and a brisk sailor’s wind. Gardens are mulched and put to bed. And in winter the coats and card games come out as Lopez settles in to its quiet period.
