The San Juan Islands, a destination of choice, are reached by both sea and air transportation. This unique archipelago of 172 islands is located midway between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia. Four of the islands are served by the Washington State Ferry System and hold the majority of the county's 14,500 population. Friday Harbor, the county seat, is the only incorporated town in the islands. Statistics show that 45% of island residents are retired and financially independent. The county population generally doubles during the summer season, with island resorts, beaches, fishing and boating attracting many visitors.
Third largest of the islands, Lopez is 15 miles long and 8 miles wide with 56 miles of shoreline. Nestled in the San Juan archipelago of over 172 islands, Lopez is only 45 minutes by ferry from mainland Anacortes. The 2100 year-round residents know Lopez as a place to "get away from it all" and where nature is still intact.
Often referred to as "the banana belt", the climate is mild with rainfall averaging only 22 inches per year. Summer temperatures settle in the 70's while winters run between 40 to 50 degrees. Snowfall usually comes in January or February and lasts a few days before melting.
County roads winding through forest and pastureland offer vistas of quiet bays and driftwood-covered beaches. The island enjoys a relaxed lifestyle and friendly atmosphere. When you visit, you'll notice that almost everyone seems to give a wave - it's not coincidence - it's a friendly Lopez custom.
With no stoplights or structures over two stories tall, Lopez Village offers islanders all of the basic services including library, restaurants, bakery, bookstore and galleries. There is also a full service grocery, a medical clinic and pharmacy as well as hardware and lumber supply, gas station and schools.
